Ocean Drive, South Carolina
The birthplace of the Shag, the official South Carolina State Dance, the Ocean Drive section, known by the locals as the "OD", is the host of two, week long "migrations" of shaggers in April and September. Sponsored by the SOS (Society of Stranders) group, the events bring thousands of devotees of this unique dance to Main Street to shag, party and visit with old friends. A dance born on the beach that combines fancy footwork, smooth moves, and has been called a cross between the jitterbug and swing dancing, it's followers are dedicated and loyal. The Shaggers, are primarily middle-aged professionals and business owners. They hold several charity golf tournaments, fundraisers and other events while in town, with the proceeds going back into the North Myrtle Beach community. On just about any night of the week you will find local shaggers, and visitors from around the country, at the many dance clubs found near Main Street. The Spanish Galleon, Fat Harold's Beach Club, Ducks, and The Pirates Cove are just a few of the clubs that play host to not only shaggers, but anyone enjoying a fun evening of beach music, cold drinks and some pretty nice folks to enjoy it all with.
